Moving tips
Your Guide to a Smooth Relocation
Effective Packing Strategies
- Declutter Before You Move
If you haven’t used something in a year and it’s not a family heirloom, think about donating, selling, or discarding it. Moving unnecessary items can be expensive.
- Document Keeping
Keep copies of important paperwork (estimates, confirmations, etc.) with you during the move for easy access.
- Box Weight Guidelines
Keep boxes manageable; if you can’t lift a box easily, it’s too heavy. Aim for a weight of under 50 pounds per box.
- Use Appropriate Cartons
Select appropriate cartons for packing; avoid using plastic trash bags.
- Proper Padding is Essential
Don’t skimp on packing materials like paper or bubble wrap. It’s better to over-cushion fragile items than under-cushion them.
- Packing Dishes
Pack dishes vertically in dish barrels, avoid stacking them, and use plenty of padding.
- Label Boxes Clearly
Label boxes with the intended room at the new location for efficient unloading. Additionally, consider creating an inventory list for each box.
- "Open First" Boxes
Prepare “open first” boxes for each room, containing essentials you’ll need for the first day in your new home.
- Arrange Child and Pet Care
If possible, arrange for childcare and pet care on moving day to ensure a smoother and safer process.
- Utilities and Mail
Arrange for utility and mail services to be turned off at your current location and turned on at your new destination. It’s advisable to overlap services by a day or two.
